What Colors Go With Cobalt Blue Cobalt blue can go well with a lot of colors but works especially well with neutral colors like white, gray, and beige. The main difference between the two is that cobalt blue is a cool color, while the ultramarine color is warmer. ![]() But phthalo blues tinting strength and dark masstone color make it a good choice as the foundation tint over which other nonstaining paints can be glazed and then selectively lifted or blotted away. Cerulean varies from brand to brand but generally behaves as a cool blue making bright greens. Cobalt Blue W&N, Cobalt Blue ShinHan, Cobalt Blue Hue Derivan, Cobalt Blue AS, Cobalt Blue DS PB28. Once I use up the tube of cobalt, I won’t buy it again and will just continue to use ultramarine blue. The closest color to cobalt blue is ultramarine blue pigment. Cobalt or ultramarine blues tend to be picked more often in palettes because they stain less harshly, and offer more interesting texture. Some artists prefer cobalt to the deeper Ultramarine as a basic blue. Cobalt also has some toxicity issues that I would rather avoid, and ultramarine blue provides an excellent alternative. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, ultramarine blue wins, hands down. Pricewise, ultramarine blue is close to half the price of a tube of cobalt blue acrylic paint. When you compare the swatches in the photo above, please note that I didn’t attempt to use the exact same amount of each colour in each mix – I generally aimed to have one mix that leaned more towards blue, and one mix that had more of the mixing colour, so that we could see a bit of a range. Ultramarine blue is a touch warmer (redder) than the cobalt blue, but I don’t consider it to be enough to keep investing and using both colours. Color: Cobalt Blue has cool blue hue and subtle green undertone while Ultramarine Blue has a more warm blue hue, with an undertone of red. The biggest noticeable difference is that ultramarine blue is darker than cobalt blue when used straight from the tube. Chemical Composition Cobalt Blue is created by the combination of aluminum oxide and cobalt oxide, and Ultramarine Blue is made from lapis lazuli, a mineral. Ultimately, I didn’t find any dramatic differences between the two.
